Tutorial form PSUser magazine.

This tutorial was from a magazine. The effect that was to be achieved was to recreate the Smurfs logo by using the 3D > Repousse tool in Photoshop. The Repousse tool is  a really nice way to get 3D text effects in photoshop. This tutorial also showed me how to affect the lighting simulator.

The Astoria Dragon

During the two years I served at USCG Air Station Astoria I also attended Clatsop Community College. It is here that I surrounded myself within the local arts community.

I met with a group of local artists each Tuesday on the top floor of an old cannery on the Columbia River. We would spend two hours together drawing from live models while discussing our art processes.

In addition to this I began taking Ceramics classes at the college after I got off work. Prior to this time, I had only a little experience with ceramics.

Watch the eight minute video that premiered on Oregon Public Broadcasting, it's very informative.

The Idea is to not get hung up along the way when you're working, but to let the process be as fluid as you can make it. So long as you have no expectations of the process, things will always turn out.

Assignment 18 - Flash Cards

This assignment was my least favorite out of all. The idea was to make flashcards, the size of a full sheet of printer paper. We were given a list of questions and statements that pertain to mental hospitals, and the treatment and care of patients.

Here is a link to my flashcards.

Assignment 20 - Radio Wave Animation

This is an assignment that I created in Adobe After Effects.

Clearly it is not the completed assignment, but with more than half of the tutorial completed, this is it. I had made this version while following along in class. When class was over I added a few effects to it and liked it. The original idea was to make it all look like a smokey text that changes.

Assignment 25 - Online tutorial

I did a tutorial that covered photo projection in After Effects. I was unable to render it in time because I accidentally did something to make it only render the first frames, instead of seconds.

The way that photo projection works is that you have a camera directly in front of a 2d image. A light is pointed through the image. The settings make it so the light casts a "shadow" / projection against other surfaces in the scene. The other surfaces are manipulated in 3d space to resemble the scene in the photograph. With the photo projected onto the surfaces, a camera can move through the scene.

Assignments 17 and 18

In assignment 17 I had to make words look like their definition, so I used the names of colors. Roy G Biv.

In assignment 18 I had to make one image from a17 slide across the other.

Decal Sticker

This is a decal sticker. I did a dinosaur because my nephew likes them, and I owe him one. This was a really easy project. I used the blob brush a little bit, the shape tool, live trace and expand.

Assignment #16 - Photo Gallery

I took screen shots from google building maker. I have made hundreds of buildings that have been put on google earth's 3d building layer on google earth and google maps. All of the aerial photos that have been given to google to use, were taken by the cities where they are available.

Web Template Redesign

This post and assignment have been done out of order. Changing website templates is almost second nature to me. I usually suffer the most when I try to find the 'perfect' template to start with. It takes fo' ever. I went with the template we used in our class example.

Visit the redesigned site live at my website.

This is the original design.

Assignment #9, Slam Cover

The background for these images is from photos I took in one of the art rooms. The furniture in the art studio is covered in paint. It's like looking at a sky full of clouds.

The words were built in Illustrator, then imported as smart objects into Photoshop. Of all the things I did, I am happiest with the use of the color replacement brush. My least favorite aspect of this project was only working on it for a couple hours. I may do more versions of this concept.

Assignment #8, Illustrator & Photoshop Brushes

The Photoshop brushes that I came up with are from pictures of paper fliers and adds that have been stapled to, then ripped off of telephone posts.

Download the photoshop brush file here.

The illustrator brushes are different kinds of foot prints. In the image, i mocked up a historical map, and plotted paths with the foot steps.

Assignment #7, More Custom True Type Fonts

Not really. Please see assignment #5 for the lowercase & symbols.

Assignment #6, Popup Pictures

For this project I used pictures of people from the drama department. I feel that the hardest part of this assignment was choosing what kind of setting to put the images in. I used Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, PremierPro, and Audacity for this project.

I plan to continue working with this file. I want to add 2-d stage props to the scene. I also have to go into the pictures and fix some of the hair coloring. I want to get rid of the ambient light in the scene, and replace it with deck-lights. I also wanted to get the names of the people. My plan is to make it a sort of snl-intro.

Assignment #5, Custom True Type Font

This is my custom .ttf. I decided to just do all the fonts you see to get them out of the way, since i was in a groove. In Brian's video he advises against pulling each letter from the font-sheet. I wrote them all out on one sheet, then enlarged all of them at once, expanded the edges, and united each letter. That seemed to provide me with the least complicated work flow.

Assignment #3, Doodles...

Assignment #4

Upload assignment #1. In this first assignment, i was to anmiate Photoshop brushes in Flash. I concieved the main idea for the piece before I actually took the picture. First, I found free brushes of birds. Then, in photoshop, I seperated the wings from three bird brushes, and saved each piece into their own layer. I imported all of my layers into Flash, but i had five animations to piece back together. I studied slow-motion water drips to create the stretch, bounce, and atomization of the dropplet. I made two copys of the drips, then revieled the bird-brushes as though they morph from the drip. The last animation was of another bird flying accross the screen. When I first added them, they looked great. As I cleaned up some of the timing issues, however, they became jittered. After I finished the birds, I NEEDED a picture. So I snapped one of the nearest pole. My original concept had the top of the pole level in the shot, but I was unable to find a spot to take the picture. Having a setting for the bird drips, and most of my original concept ruined, i needed a reason for the drips. I had to rework the ending credit animation too. I forgot to mention that i also put the soundtrack togeather myself in Audacity. I used Premier to lay the flash animatin and audio track togeather. I timed out the vibration noise on a frame-to-seconds dope-sheet. The vibration itself is just two copies of the transformer with the opacity levels taken down.

Assignment #2 and 3, the first blog post and a tablet drawing.

I made this drawing using a wacom tablet. I used photoshop to do the drawing, I gave the background a texture like paper and stained it with a ps brush. The drawing is just a doodle.

My name's raemenn jewall. I once painted a single line which ran 108 miles,
and when I grow up, I'll paint a longer one.
